Villach to Udine train relaunched June 2012

On 10th June a new service was launched between Villach in Austria and Udine, Italy. It's only a short journey (1 hour 50 mins), but one that has been missed as day services were suspended and replaced by buses for the last three years. This will be great news for people wanting to travel between Austria and northern Italy by train.

Great, thanks. So the key info:

  • New cross-border train runs twice daily in both directions.
  • Departs Villach at 09.40 and 19.29
  • Departs Udine are at 07.00 and 17.15
  • Journey time approximately 1hour 50mins
  • Tickets adults one-way from Villach to Tarvisio Boscoverde €5.40, and €12 from Villach to Udine

You can check timetables at Deutsche Bahn, OBB, Trenitalia. The HiddenEurope post says it's not possible to buy tickets online at the moment but we'll keep an eye out to see if that changes.

Operated by Ferrovie Udine Cividale.

There is also a bus service which runs throughout the day more regularly and takes approximately 1 hour 33 mins.

Dear Nicky and Susanne,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Though you'll have to forgive us, as "ticketing agencies" are also humans, (at least in the case of Loco2) and we sometimes make mistakes. You're right, the journey plan I included did indeed show the old bus service. I've removed it to avoid confusion. Thanks for pointing it out. Once the new direct train shows up in our search results I'll do my best to check details before adding again.

It would be fantastic if you can share the knowledge you have about these services directly into this forum. Any insights you've got will be helpful and I'm sure they'll be appreciated by the Loco2 community.

So many ticketing agencies just don't check details. And here's a fine example. There is indeed a new rail service that this month started between Villach and Udine via Tarvisio. It is operated by Ferrovie Udine Cividale, the local Italian company which already runs the Udine to Cividale rail service. As such, it wouldn't show on your system. The screenshot (above) that you've taken from your booking mask does not show this new train service at all, but reveals an ÖBB bus service from Villach to Udine.

The 1hr 33min travel time to which you allude refers to the ÖBB bus. The new train takes rather longer.

If you would care to contact us, we'll gladly give you timetable, fares and everything you need to know about the new cross-border rail services. More than happy to help.
